PBS Volunteer News 20-2013 THANKS!

Wow! 2013 was a great year for PBS! And I put it down to a few factors: People! People! People!  And he's some of the people who've contributed to PBS in 2013....

January was about getting the office in order. First things first, PBS reception - the face of the organisation. They say receptionists are the gatekeepers to the organisation, so at PBS, it's really important that PBS has really friendly ones! And they are, in fact PBS receptionists are the best!

Let’s also thank Switched On phone helper Mandi Barker, Jazz on Saturday: John Smout and Robbie C.

 The Reappearance of  Sally-Ann
One of January’s highlights was the special drop in of Sally Ann, the stations first woman engineer, and founding member.  At first we didn’t know who she was, but later on, there were clues everywhere to indicated that she was a pivotal player!

Sally Ann with the PBS staff January 2013

On the grapevine many staff members and volunteers remembered her mainly because she was unforgettable.

Sally Ann was the engineer on this Ralph McTell session
We didn't know that PBS had founding mothers! We only had heard about the founding fathers, so it was an honour to meet  Sally Ann. Thanks Sally-Ann for dropping in!

Another founding member Ken Fargher visited us and gave us the first PBS T-shirt for our archive, and what a pleasure it was!

And whilst we're on the topic, thanks to Jeremy Smith who found  the first edition of Waves magazine - produced before PBS was broadcasting permanently.

John Carver and Mike Sewell
Board Volunteers
The PBS Board are volunteers and they were already back to work early in the year providing PBS with the strategic direction. Mette Schepers and Mike facilitated the Strategic Planning day. As you may already know John Carver and Ross Giles finished up on the Board after many years. Claire Stuchbery stepped down as well. We also welcomed Kirsty Rivers, Jess Fairfax and Justin Naylor, joining Mike Sewell, Simon Minahan, Garry Havrillay and Jurgen Schaub.

IT/ Legal/Building Re-design Volunteers
Others you might not expect to be volunteers: Thanks to Arnold Bloch Leibler provided pro bono legal work. And thanks to the web team  - yes they're volunteers too! Thanks Jurgen and Garry Havrillay and Ray Hilton for their unbelievably fantastic work the PBS website, and thanks  to Andrew Buckley who takes care of the Android app. And we cannot thank Steve Passiouras enough for his terrific membership database that handles our memberships. And thanks to Zvi and the team from ITN architects with new designs for the station

Community Cup Volunteers representing PBS for the Megahertz Ethan Hill, Joe Brnadic, Sam Johnstone, Maddie MacFarlane (Co-Captain), Adrian Maiolla, Adrian Meade, Marisa Quigley, Ruby Koomen and Adrian Basso. Community Cup support staff need a mention. That’s: Vince Peach & Crispi Winsor, and commentators Ruari Currin and Lyndelle Wilkinson. And thanks to PBS volunteer Mary Anne Parker for her excellent cheering along with the lycra loving Real Hot Bitches 80’s dance troupe.
And thanks to Shari H, Viktoria W, Jane B, Nick S, Liz A, Angela B, Heyden & Ryan H everyone else who put their hand up to volunteer with Reclink for this great community event.
Megahertz 2013 team. Thanks to Annaliese from 3RRR for the pic!

Tape Archive
As you can imagine, PBS has a number of live recordings of music produced by local, national, international and intergalactic artists. The earliest recordings on on reel to reel, and behind the scenes, they're being digitised one at a time. Little did we realise there would be a system of archive and administration to develop as well as notes about the recordings. There were volunteers who assisted with the process. This includes Alex Simms, Adrian Meade and Maree Prokos. Thanks for helping us get this moving.

Open Day October 26
Our Open Day was on the same day as ATP doh! But more to the point: Open Day is all about opening the doors to the public so they can see what happens inside a community radio station. This year we had a terrific team including:  Adam B, Andy M, Campbell M, Chris P, Chris X, Damian O-K, Di C, Gary L, Greg T, Huw G, Jan D, John C, Jess P, John C, Jurgen S, Ken L, Kristine P, Laura F, Michael M, Miles R, Myles O-S, Neil W, Robbie C, Rochelle L, Tal L, Tom M, Emma P + Saul!  Thank you to you for helping us welcome our community!

Party People
Parties are the one of the best activities to volunteer at. Volunteers helped us make the party in various roles such as runners, bar, DJs, door people and we’d like to thank to the following contributors that helped out at PBS parties. These include Grace Kindellan Thomas Marinelli, Felix Kirsch, Lucille Cutting, Thomas Dell'Oro, Remy Cerritelli, Sally and Kerrie, Ron Dickinson, Richie 1250, CC Disco, Nick Brown, Edd Fisher, Miss Goldie, Matt McFetridge, Lewis Can Cut, Logan Jeffs, Mike Guerrieri & Emma Peel.
Production Many people request to volunteer in the Production department but unfortunately we can only accommodate a few, but there were a fine few! Thanks to John Jenkins, Luanna Rowe, Jill Chrisp and Nick Buechler for helping in the Production Office.

Artists
We really do need to single out the great artists that provided the imagery for PBS this year. This includes graphic designers Rex of Blisterfinger and Greg Tippett. The photographers were Jon Osborne, Lucy Spartalis, Remy Cerritelli and Neil Walker. Thank you for sharing your talent with PBS and for your great work over various projects over the year!

Andy with some of the Get Up Morning crew
Most announcers either produce their program on their own, or have a small team of people who help create content over the year. There was one show that had a number of volunteer contributors: That’s Get Up Morning. They put together content that was innovative, inclusive [for children], engaging the music community, and entertaining and the PBS grid saw a return of the radio play. Let’s thank Marieke Hardy, Lluis Sanchez, Michael McManus (Macka), Emma Burt, and Jurgen Shuab. The rather large cast included Jon Chapple (Harmony); Chris Drane (Cherrywood/ Whitewash); ; Linda & Bean Johnston (The Dacios/ The Bulls); Josh Crawley & Nick Finch (Graveyard Train); Bruce Milne; Paul Stewart (Painters & Dockers); Mick Thomas; Pete (Spinning Rooms); Sam Wass and George Hyde (Jack On Fire); Phil, Alex and Frank Gionfriddo (Dynamo/ Bowers/ Barbarion); Wayne Slattery (King Parrot) Ally, Lucy and Kat Spazzy (The Spazzys); Jo Roberts and Richard & Jaws Stanley (Ooga Boogas/ Onyas/ Meanies/ Aarght Records).  These plays were accompanied by an Ebook which can be found here

Final Thanks

Volunteer Coordinator says happy xmas on behalf of PBS!

2013 proved that PBS was all about people getting together, sharing their ideas, talent and passion for music and radio - to either make radio or help a radio station function behind the scenes – or both!  No matter how large or seemingly small the contribution was, it’s the participation of many that makes this place work. Thanks to everyone who volunteered and made PBS what it was in 2013. On behalf of us at PBS HQ, have a happy, safe, fun festive season and we look forward to the exciting possibilities of 2014!

The office is closed December 20 2013  6pm
We return on Monday January 6 2014 at 10am

Now, here’s just one more look back at 2013: PBS xmas party pictures
